Red Riding Hood

Recording Date: 23rd March 2020

Here are some activities linked to this story:

Play:

Do you know someone, like grandma in the story, who’s feeling a bit poorly or might be stuck on their own? How about you make them a gift to cheer them up, like Red Riding Hood does for her grandma? You could

* Draw a picture

* Write a letter

* Make some cakes (real or maybe some pretend ones?!)

Then why not ask a grown up to help drop it round or pop it on their doorstep? If you can’t leave the house, why don’t you surprise someone else in your own home? If there’s someone working from home in another room, could you make them a picnic lunch to eat?

Arts and crafts:

-  Red Riding Hood Puppet (see attachment) – colour in and attach the arms and legs with pins (or…as you may be like me and not have any pins, you could use string, sticky tape or just glue them on!)

·  Why don’t you make a little ‘forest’ using twigs stuck in play dough decorated with paper leaves?

Music:

·  Big Bad Wolf song: Beanstalk Arts – video is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmkSx8gIIFM or you can listen to the full band version at https://beckyborisandthebeats.bandcamp.com/track/big-bad-wolf

·  Have a listen to Peter and the Wolf classic musical story! I rather like this crackly old audio-only version on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g7Bl-HtjhE – but there are lots of more modern versions of course. (My gran had a very similar one to this, and we would often listen to it when I was little as we did drawing on her kitchen table, aah happy memories!)

Watching:

·  Pack of wolves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBjfN6RgI7k  (4 minute clip from BBC earth – they’re a little bit fierce so maybe check before you show a sensitive kid)

·  Cute (very cute!) baby snow wolves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVN14lf8yTc (Just under 4 minutes from BBC earth)

·  Ladybird ‘First Favourite Tales’ version of Little Red Riding Hood: https://www.worldbookday.com/videos/little-red-riding-hood-2/

·  My year 2 daughter has been doing ‘twisted fairytales’ at school recently, so we’re going to look at Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ – the new version is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u52E05DAN_4 and there’s a crackly classic  reading at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3uVQIhSYfY

Reading:

Have you any books at home about this story? Or ANY other books that might feature forests, wolves or other woodland animals? If so, you could dig them out for story time, or just put them ready in a book corner inviting a small hands to explore. Here are a few links to versions online you could tell, or print for for older kids to read:

·  https://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/littlered/story.htm

·  https://www.storynory.com/little-red-riding-hood-2/

Active:

·  You could play ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?

·  Can you have a race like Red Riding Hood and the Wolf? Maybe an obstacle course could be made in the house? If you are able to get outside, maybe you could race in the park?

Educational (probably best for slightly older kids):

·  Wolf fact file: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/big_wolf.pdf

·  Word search and crossword: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/wordsearch.pdf

·  And if you’re looking for more educational stuff, on Twinkl there are LOTS of Red Riding Hood worksheets - https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resources/story-resources/traditional-tales/little-red-riding-hood
